Litter Box Problems? 7 Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them
Share
A cat who stops using the litter box is not being difficult. Something is usually bothering them. Check these common causes first.
1. The box is dirty. Cats are very clean animals. Scoop at least once a day and wash the box regularly.
2. The location is wrong. Boxes next to noisy appliances or in busy hallways can put cats off. Choose a quiet, easy-to-reach spot.
3. The box is too small. Your cat should be able to turn around comfortably. Larger boxes are often more popular.
4. Too few boxes. A common rule is one box per cat, plus one extra.
5. The litter changed. Cats can be picky about texture and scent. If you switch brands, mix the new litter with the old gradually.
6. Strong cleaning products. Harsh scents can put cats off. Use mild, unscented soap and rinse well.
7. Stress or change. A move, new pet, or changed routine can affect your cat. Give them time and a quiet space.
Important: If your cat suddenly changes their bathroom habits, strains, or seems in pain, contact your vet promptly. Health problems can be the cause.
