How to Slow Down a Fast Eater: Easy Mealtime Solutions
Share
Some dogs finish a bowl in under a minute. Eating very fast can lead to gulping air, mess, and a pet who still wants more. Here are easy ways to slow things down.
1. Use a slow-feeder bowl. The raised patterns in these bowls make your dog work around obstacles to reach the food.
2. Try a sniffing mat. Scatter kibble in the folds so your dog has to search for each piece. It slows eating and gives their nose a workout.
3. Split meals into smaller portions. Instead of one large meal, offer two or three smaller ones through the day. Keep the total amount the same.
4. Scatter food on a clean surface. For a quick, no-cost option, spread kibble across a clean tray or baking sheet.
5. Make them earn it. Puzzle toys that release food as your dog plays turn dinner into a game.
6. Keep mealtime calm. If you have more than one pet, feed them in separate spaces so nobody feels they need to rush.
When to ask your vet: If your dog frequently vomits after meals, or seems uncomfortable when eating, check with your vet.
